Anybody want a dog?

I was getting ready to go to bed last night when I heard whining outside the back door.  Sadie, as always, was inside with us and bristled.  I went and opened the door a bit to peek out, and this dog came right in.

"Cliff," I said, "have you ever seen this dog before?"

"What dog?"

"This one."

And Blondie followed me into the living room.

"Get it out of here," was Cliff's gruff response.

I went on to bed and Sadie took her place beside me.  The bedroom windows were open:  I heard whining and saw the stray standing on its hind legs with paws on the edge of the window, peeking in through the screen.  Sadie's protective instincts kicked in and she began barking.

"Cliff?"

"What."

"Would you chase this dog away?  It's looking in the window and making Sadie bark."

"If you hadn't let it in, it wouldn't be hanging around," he grumbled, as he went for the back door.

He came in saying it was obvious nobody had ever tried to shoo the dog away before.  It wouldn't leave.

I was awakened twice in the night by the stray's whining and Sadie's warning barks.

So at 6 AM this morning I went outside, with thunder rumbling overhead, to turn Blue out to pasture.  Guess who was plastered against the back door when I opened it?  And guess who followed at my heels all the way to the dry lot and back?

Rain was approaching, and I hated to see the poor little thing get wet.  Besides, it must be hungry after spending the whole night at my door.

No, I did not bring the stray inside again.  But I gave it some food and water on the front porch, so perhaps it would realize there was a dry place to stay, out of the rain.

That's where she is now.  That's where I took the pictures.  Oh yeah, I checked.  It's a she.  Bad news, because I was considering letting her stay if nobody claimed her.  It would be nice to have a dog that stays home  when you turn it loose, unlike Sadie.

Honestly, I think this mutt belongs to someone.  When I picked her up last night to take her back outside, she smelled clean.  She's very friendly, with a tendency to jump up on people.  That makes me think she belongs to children.  I wish they had put put a collar and tags on her.

For the time being, she'llbe called Blondie.  She can't stay long.  I don't intend to spend $100 of my vacation money having a dog spayed.

Maybe some of the neighbor kids will know something about her.
