When we're in the midst of our annual drought, I tend to forget that rain is even a remote possibility. Yesterday some weather-person on TV said, "Oh, there's a slight chance of rain, but it's so slight I don't want to mention it and get your hopes up."
We hadn't had anything more than a sprinkle for a month or so. As I fell asleep in my air-conditioned bedroom, I saw weather bulletins creeping across the bottom of the television screen. Radar showed thunderstorms fifty miles to the north of us. When I passed through the sauna that is my kitchen on my last trip to the bathroom, the grandson mentioned that he heard thunder, and I said, wearily, "Yeah well, the storms won't be coming here."
But this morning I looked outside to see wet sidewalks. Flashlight in hand, I went to check the rain gauge and we did, indeed, get almost an inch of rain. Maybe the brown pasture will turn green again.

FOUND!!! the baby picture everyone wanted to see
There are probably more of these in my mom's treasure trove of photos, but this old stained, mistreated copy is the one I've come up with so far.

I know it's Frances on the left and me on the right; I was bald, so Mother kept a bonnet on me so people would know I was a girl. Lela and Alice have always had coal black hair (until they started turning gray... LOL), but Alice's hair is even curlier than mine. So, since second-from-the-left has straight hair, Alice has to be the bald one. That makes it: Frances, Lela, Alice and me.

Here you have Lela, Alice, Frances, and me.
Are you all happy now?
(For another picture of me as a child, check out my Wordless Wednesday entry at Blogger.

twenty-eight entries in the drawing!
I took the screen names or the e-mail of each entry, typed them into Word, and printed the list. Then I used scissors and cut, to separate them into individual pieces of paper.
I now have each of the twenty-eight pieces of paper folded and ready for the drawing.

At some time convenient for Cliff today, he will draw a name. Good luck!

Searching for a pretty sunrise
I left the house at 5:30 this morning in total darkness. Looking to the east, I saw the kind of clouds that usually make for a lovely sunrise; I figured I'd get some pretty pictures. You just can't predict some things, though. The sunrise never really materialized into "fantastic".
We're pushing 100 degrees here every day. The heat is unrelenting: the dust gets thicker and the grass gets browner. Seems to be the norm in recent years, a drought every summer. I'm quite a wimp any more; I have the bedroom A.C. running so I can duck in there and get some relief.
Thank God we have plenty of hay for the horses. Enough for two winters, actually.

About that "baby picture"
In a previous entry, I mentioned a picture of four baby girls sitting on a blanket, taken in 1945. I have looked among all the treasured photos my mom left behind and haven't found it today. So I'm going to write to my cousin, Lela, and see if she has that picture. If so, I'll ask her to make me a copy. And once I get it, I'll put it here for all to see, along with the picture taken last Sunday of the same girls... sixty-two years later.
