A sad Kentucky Derby

I love the Kentucky Derby; I thrill at seeing some horse in the backfield overtake the rest of the contenders, one by one, and win by five lengths; this is what usually happens.

I always pick out a favorite to root for.  This year, since there was a filly in the running (a rare event), I chose Eight Belles.  Wow, seventeen hands:  That's one tall girl.

We ladies have to stick together, right?

She did well, placing second.  Then fell to the ground with both front ankles broken.  She had to be put down.

It was a great race, but it was marred by Belle's death.

If you missed the race, you can watch it HERE.

I wonder why she had to be put down....??  Horses don't recover from broken ankles?  That is sad....she's a beautiful horse....

Wow.  Now I'm glad I didn't watch.  How depressing.

I always wonder if horse racing is cruel.  It seems like they are running too fast on those little spindley legs.  But what do I know about horses?  Not much.

It just broke my heart MO!  But at least she did not suffer for long.  I have been reading your back entries and I am so very happy for you getting your new home!    OH HAPPY DAY!   Hope it happens soon.    Anne

Donna, we watched the race too. I was rooting for 'Big Brown' AND 'Eight Belles' She was such a beauty ! I loved the color of her tail. Those light hightlights on the end of it were so pretty.

When I saw she was on the ground injured and then heard that they had to put her down, I cried. She had run a great race. To end up on the ground with both ankles broken was tragic for sure. Thankfully they ended her suffering as quick as possible.
I love to watch the DERBY. It's always an exciting race.

The jockey's story on 'Big Brown' was quite heart tugging too. As well as the trainer's journey to the Derby. So I was pleased that Big Brown came through to win.

Each time I hear about a race horse getting hurt during a race it saddens me deeply. Such a beautiful animal. But I to know little about horses just that they are a beautiful thing to behold.

As I put in my entry, she was my favorite, too.  She ran beautifully, and I just cried when they announced that they'd had to euthanize her.

It's just abuse to me, making those horses run their hearts (and legs) out so humans can make millions of dollars off them. What a beautiful horse she was!
