Snow days

The past two days have been "snow days" for the local school.  So once the granddaughters were awake and ready, Cliff went and picked them up and brought them over.  The girls aren't picky about what they eat, but since our main meal here is dinner at noon, I fixed good old "comfort foods" for the four of us while they were here:  Dishes Cliff and I love, but that are a little (or a lot) higher in fat that the things I normally fix for me and Cliff.

Tuesday I made Pioneer Woman's chicken spaghetti, which always makes a big hit.  So yesterday, Cliff said Natalie asked him as she was getting out of the pickup, "What is Grandma making today?"

"Tuna-noodle casserole."

"Monica!  We're having tuna-noodle casserole!"

I'm glad simple food can cause them such excitement.  I baked a couple of big sweet potatoes in the microwave to go along with the casserole; the girls had never had a baked sweet potato before, they said; they loved them.

Cliff and I have been eating a lot of baked sweet potatoes lately:  the Walmart in Richmond (not the stinkin' Blue Springs Supercenter that I never plan to patronize ever again) was left with a surplus of sweet taters after Thanksgiving, and I took advantage of them, at 19 cents per pound.  The store also had some lovely celery for 19 cents a bunch!

I'm sorry, but bargains excite me these days.

Monica played outside from noon till after 3 with the neighbor kids; when she came in, her clothes were soaked through.  Natalie spent over an hour outside also.  I'd love to have taken pictures, but with the ice making it hard to walk, and my knee still healing from surgery, I didn't think I'd better risk it.

Looks like school will probably be in session today.

It is pouring down freezing rain here today and by evening we should have an accumulation of some kind of snow.  No snow day here of course, they'll pour the salt on the roads and we'll be going slow.  I love baked sweet potatoes but I pour on the cinnamon, suger and butter.  I see they now have frozen oven baked sweet potato fries and I need to try those out too.  'On Ya' - ma

BARGAINS EXCITE ME EVERY TIME!  And I enjoy hearing of others that find them.

Sounds like you have great grandchildren!  I bet it's fun to have them around.  I know my inlaws love living next door to us now...before they were and hour and 1/2 away so we didn't get to see them that much.

You know, I used to get excited about what my grandma was cooking every day....comfort foods, indeed....

Your comfort food sounds really yummy.
I don't blame you for talking about bargains -- these days it's like finding a million dollars.  I bought some red sweet potatoes at our local Kroger recently that were a really good deal and they tasted great -- the best ones I've had all year.

I would be excited over that kind of food too. I love baked sweet potatoes too.  (With lots of butter)   I know your grandchildren love spending time with you both.  I love bargains too.  It's still warm weather here, but they are predicting colder temps for this weekend.  Be careful with that knee.
