annoying sounds

I don't use the AOL software to access my AOL content, and haven't for ages.  I simply go to AOL.com by way of my Firefox browser, sign in, and read my mail.  Unless I close my browser, I stay signed in all day.

One of the most irritating things about AOL, way back when I used their software, was that annoying "You've got mail!"  Cliff has impaired hearing, but that AOL man's voice must be right in his best range, because he could hear it three rooms away.  I've even known it to wake him up.  As for myself, I simply got tired of it.  So one advantage of using Firefox was that I didn't have to hear "You've got mail".

But AOL decided I missed it, I guess.  Because recently, every time I clicked to read my email, there that guy was shouting at me again.  Finally this morning I figured out how to shut him up.

I recently downloaded AIM, and I had the same problem:  annoying sounds!  See, I'm often listening to music at my computer.  There's nothing more frustrating that to be listening to my favorite artist and hear a lion's roar or a car horn or a dog barking, or some other totally foreign sound butting in.  Then I realized that my current buddy sound, a cow mooing, was probably the worst offender of all!

So I finally figured out how to turn all those noises off.  Hopefully, nothing will interrupt my music again.

I must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed, eh?  This entry sounds grumpy.  OK, I'll counteract the rant with this:  I'm thankful there's a way to turn off those annoying sounds!

I wish I could have your You've Got Mail Guy.  I liked that.  If I was surfing the net...I would know when I had mail.  Since I got Bellsouth...I have to check from time to time to see if I've got mail.  There may be some way of being notified on Bellsouth, but I don't know what it is.  I'm glad that you got your setup like you want it though.

I wish you would share how to do it.  I almost jumped out of my chair one night sitting at the computer.  Strange sounds do not only annoy me they scare me too.

My Dad was the same way when they first got online. He wanted to know how to shut up all those noises of slamming doors and whatnot! So you are not alone. Sometimes I have the sound off completely as I want total quiet.

Donna....you can turn off all those annoying sounds by going to your Control Panel and selecting the little Sounds and Audio Devices icon there.

Then click on the 'Sounds' tab and scroll down to the  AOL section.....click the sound you want to turn off.........in the drop down box is the word NONE....click that, and it turns the sound off. You can also 'change' the sound there. If you WANT a different alert that is. I turned off ALL those pesky sounds like WELCOME, GOODBYE, YOU'VE GOT MAIL etc.etc.etc.

ah yes, just some of the many things that annoy me about AOL.  Personally I hate how even their littlest software just hijacks your computer whenever it wants to!  Honestly I don't know why I keep using it for anything!

I'm glad you figured out how to turn the sounds off.
I set up my welcome and mail sounds from AOL expressions, so I have Yoda saying, "I am wondering, why are you here?" when I sign on, Mick Jagger saying, "You've got some lettuhs", and Yoda again saying, "Nothing more will I teach you today." when I sign off.
