Life's Railway

My mom and daddy used to sing this song, back in the farthest recesses of my memory.

1. Life is like a mountain railway,
With an engineer that's brave;
We must make the run successful,
From the cradle to the grave;
Watch the curves, the fills, the tunnels;
Never falter, never quail;
Keep your hands upon the throttle,
And your eyes upon the rail.

Chorus:
Blessed Savior, Thou wilt guide us,
Till we reach that blissful shore,
When the Angels wait to join us
In Thy praise for evermore.

2. You will roll up grades of trial;
You will cross the bridge of strife;
See that Christ is your conductor
On this lightning train of life;
Always mindful of obstruction,
Do your duty, never fail;
Keep your hands upon the throttle,
And your eyes upon the rail.
Chorus:

3. You will often find obstructions,
Look for storms and wind and rain;
On a fill, or curve, or trestle
They will almost ditch your train;
Put your trust alone in Jesus,
Never falter, never fail;
Keep your hands upon the throttle,
And your eyes upon the rail.
Chorus:

4. As you roll across the trestle,
Spanning Jordan's swelling tide,
You behold the Union Depot
Into which your train will glide;
There you'll meet the Superintendent,
God, the Father, God the Son,
With the hearty, joyous plaudit,
"Weary Pilgrim, welcome home."

Johnny Cash and the Carters did the song justice.

WOW Donna ! My mom and dad used to sing that one too. I remember many trips to and from my grandmother's house (about 45 miles from our home) they would sing to the top of their lungs, that song and others like it.

My mom was the musician in the family.....dad, well let's just say he really loved music but couldn't keep up with mom. LOL. Mom would try to harmonize with him as they sang.....and EVERY time he would get off of his part (the melody usually) and start singing what mom was singing. It was a riot ! We used to laugh so hard about it. Dad tried and tried but he just couldn't do it. They had a lot of fun on those trips though.

As I got older I would sing with them. And again mom would try and get us all to sing different parts etc.  But dad always ended up singing one of the parts mom and I were singing. What fond memories that conjures up.

Thanks Donna, for sharing that song !
