ice

This series of storms started out as just a little bit of freezing drizzle and then changed to sleet.  Not a big problem, since sleet doesn't build up on trees or make the roads slick.  It accumulated harmlessly in our yard, looking like snow, and we didn't worry.

Then we got off-and-on freezing drizzle again, which joined with the sleet on the ground to make a wonderful ice-skating rink, right in my own yard.

I haven't ventured further than just outside the door, where I can hang onto a door handle to keep from falling.

This presents two problems for Sadie, my dog:  First, she feels that the icy, hard surface is not the proper sort of place to potty.  It feels too much like a floor, perhaps.  Second, since I won't leave the door handle, Sadie can't get to her usual potty area.  I have to keep her on her retractable leash because she runs away, given the opportunity.

So when I'd take her out, she'd circle and sniff, semi-squat as if to pee, change her mind, circle again, and return to me, mission not accomplished.

I admire her for her bladder capacity.  Her last potty break was at 6 PM yesterday.  She finally was able to relieve herself this morning at 8.  Once she started, I thought she'd sprung a permanent leak, because she "went" for a long time.

I've been wondering how you were faring in this storm ... went to the STL news website to get info on the missing boys in MO ... quite the storm you have there.  Up here in Upper Michigan, we are just having the usual icy cold & dry snow.
I remember an ice storm several years ago when the cats couldn't even walk up the wooden porch stairs.
I have my dog's retractable leash on a big hook out on the deck; I snap the end just outside the door so that I don't have to put shoes on, esp. for middle-of-the-nite projects.

So glad she was "in control" or your house could be a mess.

Also glad you don't let go the door handle.  That looks like dangerous ice!  We must protect our "old bones".

. . . and I thought it was cold here!  Dog's water is frozen for the 3rd day.  I really feel for both you and Sadie.  Stay safe, Donna.  Blessings, Penny http://journals.aol.com/firestormkids04/FromHeretoThere

Poor Sadie. She's such a good doggie!!  Do you put anything on that ice to give more traction? Or wear special boots? I'm so oblivious to living in that kind of weather.
Just don't fall and break a hip!  That's the downfall of many people when that happens.
Be careful!!!   Pam

It is suppose to hit us later today.  At least people there kinda know how to drive in the ice ...here in Texas they don't major accidents galore.  Stay warm! xox Barbara

My friend's dogs hate to go out when it's just raining or something, I can imagine how poor Sadie feels :(  It's only 29 here and no ice YET, it will probably happen tonight because it's getting colder and it's raining still, the new puppies do NOT like it LOL  you should see them, they are so cute.  Hugz, Teresa
