According to the weather-guessers, our weather is supposed to take a turn for the worse, with rain possibly starting tomorrow and sticking around for three or four days.  So I left the granddaughters in Cliff's care and went for a ride, just in case it's my last chance for awhile.

Blue and I wandered through the woods along the river for about an hour.  I couldn't help thinking about an article I read in the Kansas City Star:

"Barges on the Missouri River may be an endangered species.

For the first time since 1951, the amount of cargo hauled by barges on the Missouri River this shipping season was estimated at less than 200,000 tons, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

That was just a fraction of the cargo hauled on the Mississippi River, and a northern drought is partially to blame.

“We had the lightest year we have ever had,” said Roger Harris, vice president of operations for Magnolia Marine in Vicksburg, Miss. “We can’t seem to get any water.”

A years-long drought in the upper reaches of the river in Montana and North and South Dakota has contributed to the decrease in traffic. The drought has depleted the northern reservoirs so severely that the corps is unable to release enough water to bolster levels downstream.

River levels have hit record lows in Kansas City and are barely covering the drinking-water intakes."

It was a pleasant ride, and the turkey frame soup I made before I left this morning really hit the spot.  Blue had to settle for sweet feed.

We are always having droughts in California, it seems.  I think we are having one now.  We always need more rain, but seldom get it.

Turkey Frame Soup.  I haven't had the opportunity to make that yet, but I plan to, ever since you posted the recipe.

Have a good rest of the day, Donna!

Mosie ~ east texas is having a drought also, it's been going on a couple years now or more, the lakes in this area are WAY down below their normal level.  Not to mention the ranches/hay/feed etc. for the horses and cattle in this area.  I don't suppose you would repost the Turkey Frame Soup recipe??? (hopeful look) I love cooking and always enjoy trying new recipes :)  Have a good day.

We always have droughts here.  I remember one year if you were caught washing your car in the driveway you'd be fined.  Once, you could only water your grass on certain days.  It's been crazy here sometimes.
Glad you enjoyed your ride with Blue.

Great picture. I thought about making your turkey frame soup but I knew Ken doesn't like soup so today the frame went into the garbage along with a lot of turkey and ham. Wish I had of known someone who could have used it. Helen

Hi Donna, I made your Turkey frame soup and it was so good!  I love your view from behind Blue's ears.  What great scenery you have.   Vicki

Nice view!  Turkey frame soup will have to wait until Thanksgiving or sooner, should I decide I'm in the mood for turkey -- we had ham for Christmas dinner this year!

I used your recipe and added every vegetable I had. Made it for my daughter down in TX and her family of 7 before I left. Hated to leave without having some!

We live just a few blocks from the Ohio River. I listen to barges blowing their horns all night long....that low sound..it is very soothing

I like this picture looking out toward the river.  I love all your pictures with the horse head and ears!  This is your "signature".  Now has all your bad weather moved out?  Or are you getting some snow?  I need to look at the Desktop Weather Channel I just downloaded.
