And while I'm joining the 21st century....

I'm thinking of buying a wireless router.  Circuit City has one that is $29 after rebates (and their rebates are very user-friendly).  With one of these, I could sit in my Lazy-boy with my notebook computer in my lap, watching CSI while surfing the Internet.  In fact, I could sit in the yard and surf the Internet.

I found several sites that explain the whole process.  THIS ONE seems to explain it pretty well.   THIS ONE is also a good explanation.

It would be especially nice because when my oldest granddaughter visits, she could use one computer while I use another.

There's something about a password that worries me, but I can probably figure it all out.  If not, I'll call my son.

(I edited this entry, thanks to a heads-up from the daughter.)

I had the wireless for a week but it kept bumping me off, so I had it hardwired into my laptop. I sit in the same chair anyway.   Good luck, if anybody can understand the dynamics of this conundrum, you can!    Anne

All our computers in the house are wireless but the main one.  That's five working wireless plus my husbands laptop.   Do you have the wireless card for your laptop??  If not, you'll need one of those also.

"with my desktop in my lap"...I hope you mean your "lap top"!  I mean, really, that desktop PC could get heavy!  I've been thinking about wireless, myself, but all of the computers would need wireless cards.  Your laptop already has one.

we're wireless and I love it; our cable company hooked us all up with the routers, etc. Expensive, but I'm computer illiterate. We have three computers hooked up that can be on the internet at the same time which is awesome in my opinion

We have a router that has two computers on it but the laptop is wireless. Pretty neat. We just had to buy some kind of card to put into a usb port on the laptop and no passwords are needed. Hope you accomplish what you are looking for. Helen

The biggest plus for wireless with me is....I  can stay in the same room with my husband in the evening as he watches "the news" and I can still surf.

Oh yeah, you'd love the wireless router.

Hmm. Didn't I suggest this very thing a few months ago? LOL! We've been wireless for a few years and it's GREAT. We have a PC in the family room. A PC in the living room and 2 laptops that float from room to room (his and hers). It's really great when one of us is sick. A laptop in bed is a great thing. Just IM to the kitchen and ask for soup. ;-)
