Henbit in rhyme

                                                               HENBIT

I ride in the fields before planting, each year.
In early March, cropland is brown and austere.
The trees will start budding, and just about then
It’s time for the plains to turn purple again.

I gazed at these weeds, and I made it my aim
To search and ask questions and find out their name.
So I asked a bunch of my message-board friends,
And then in my journal I asked, once again.

Finally, somebody figured it out.
I googled it up and it’s true, there’s no doubt:
Henbit’s the name of this plentiful plant:
They’d like to get rid of the stuff, but they can’t.

I spend too much time at this keyboard, it’s true,
When I could find plenty of work I could do:
My time isn’t wasted; I have this to say:
I found out the meaning of henbit today!

How beautiful the purple is- you're right we're never to old to learn something new and your poem is delightful!  'On Ya' - ma

The leaves look to be just a bit stickery. I've never heard of Henbit. Not sure if we have it here or not, we have so many weeds and many of them bloom. Thanks, Paula

What a great entry!  I loved it in poem form :)

I have seen this in my yard before and had no clue what it was-now I can point it out and seem knowledgeable!

Hope you have a great weekend, Jeff http://pointclickjeff.blogspot.com/

Weeds are only weeds if they are the minority among other plants.  A rose growing amidst a patch of dandelions would be considered a weed.  I think a highschool science teacher told us that.

Keep posting the pictures.
We need a few more days for some color here. Some neighbors raking the leaves off their flower beds are seeing hints of color. Me thinks they's pushing it. Our frosts aren't over yet.
