lighting the advent candles

When the pastor called Tuesday and asked if the girls and I would mind lighting the advent candle today, my first question was, "What does that involve?"

I was raised in the Church of Christ, attended Baptist churches later on, and am still a member of the Assembly of God.  The Church of Christ didn't believe in celebrating Christmas at all, and as far as I know, the other two don't do the Advent thing.

I really don't like getting up in front of a group, but the early services at St. Luke are casual, and not that many folks attend it.  So I agreed.

The girls and I practiced our reading all week, and I must say they did great.  The only fly in the ointment was that Natalie couldn't figure out how to work this particular lighter; she insisted on trying again and again, but I finally took over.  This was no big deal to any of us; perhaps some members of the congregation got a smile from it.

Samantha has been asking me if she can go to 'church school' with some of the other kids in her class at school.  They are picked up wednesday from school for two hours and then back to school.  At first I said no because I didn't want her to miss any school but then I was told that teachers can't teach while their students are away.  Even if it's only one student.  They spend the time catching up and reviewing.  I don't go to church and haven't in the longest time but I'm still thinking of letting her go.  She went to Church with her grandma Thanksgiving and loved it.

Donna, love your old church and seeing the inside. Beautiful. Good for you and the girls to be part of the advent service.   A good memory for them and you.
thanks for sharing.  Our ground in MN is covered with snow, and looks like a Christmas card.  Good to see Navitiy people on lawns instead of Santa Claus and more Santa .........

Nice pictures. Looks like you all had a good time.
Looking back, it's hard to believe I was once an Alter Boy. Enjoyed serving Sunday mornings and Holidays. Seems like that was all so long ago. Fernan

that is so neat that you participated in the lighting of the candles. Your girls will remember this from year to year! I was raised Catholic so I remember the advent wreaths. I attend a Foursquare church now; we celebrate Christmas and decorate accordingly, but we don't have any advent wreaths.

Sounds like a lovely thing  to participate in.  Mama used to hang an advent calendar up.  But I've never done it for my kids.  -  Barbara

I can't imagine any Christian church not celebrating Christmas!  Advent is such a special time of preparation and the candles only serve to remind us of what we need to do to prepare for the coming of our Lord.  It's really an ongoing all year everyday thing we should all do, but Advent and Christmas high light our Church year.  Advent blessings to you and yours.  'On Ya' - ma
