One of my favorite readings

I first read this in Dear Abby or Ann Landers, and my kids were still living here.  I'm not sure why it stikes such a chord in me, but it does... every time I read it.

                          After A While

    After awhile you learn
    the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
    and you learn
    that love doesn't mean leaning
and company doesn't always mean security.
    And you begin to learn
    that kisses aren't contracts
    and presents aren't promises
You begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of an adult not the grief of a child.
    And you learn
to build your roads on today
    because tomorrow's ground is
    too uncertain for plans
and futures have ways of falling down
    in mid-flight.
    After a while you learn
    that even sunshine burns
    if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
    and decorate your own soul
    instead of waiting for someone
    to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure,
    you really are strong,
and you really do have worth.

    And you learn

    And you learn

    With every goodbye, you learn.....

This has always been one of my favorites too. I have copies of it printed out and give to friends now and then.

When I get home I need to print this out along with the ham balls recipe. This is wonderful!  Anne

My ma used to put up clippings from "Dear Abby/Ann" on the fridge.  I can remember one that was a list about what parents teach children.  It was themed like "Teach a child ___" and he "Will Grow To Be ____".  Hilarious.  One of the lines read:

Teach a child RIDICULE  and he will grow up to be ASHAMED

I guess they didn't pay too much attention to that one.  Sigh.  I'm over it.
